I was nervously listening to the other new students, while we were waiting to go into the great hall. I heard many different speculations on the different houses.

"Hufflepuffs are supposed to be friendly..."

"Be sure to try to study with a Ravenclaw if you need help.... they are pretty smart..."

"Gyffindors are supposed to be the bravest..."

"I heard most of the dark witches and wizards were Slytherins..."

At that thought I shuddered. I may be muggle born, but I did read a lot of books when I found out I was a witch. My parents, needless to say were a little shocked at first. Then my mom just sighed, shook her head, and said something about it explaining a lot. I guess my accidental magic was quite a handful. She said it helped me a lot with my dancing, music, art and school. I'm not sure though, I always thought I just had talent. Of course I was always rather good in my science classes, especially when we did chemistry. Hopefully that will help in Potions. I heard on the train it is rather hard. Then there was the time my flute instructor said it looked like my fingers grew while I played fast runs. Maybe she wasn't so crazy after all....

"... the sorting ceremony is about to start. Move along."

The witch was back and she jolted me out of my musings. Several of the students were holding back giggles. I looked up and saw a ghost putting bunny ears on her. One of the boys next to me whispered something about his brother telling him all about Peeves and his practical jokes. I guess that is the ghost's name. He left us when the witch gave him a very stern look. I really hope I am never on the receiving end of that look.

It seemed like the ceremony was taking a really long time and I was getting more nervous by the minute. I thought it would be alphabetical. That usually makes me one of the first. Okay, calm down, but how can I? I mean what if it asks me a difficult question, or what if the hat puts me in Slytherin? I didn't like the sound of the dark witch thing...

"Davis, Alexandria!"

Just breathe and relax....

"Ah, a first in your family. I see all of your potential in your head. It's all here. Friendly and loyal, clever, brave, even a little ambition...."

I knew I was judging a book by its cover, but, after hearing about the dark wizards, I couldn't help but hope not to go in Slytherin....

"I shall put you in......
RAVENCLAW!!"

Relief flowed through my veins as I joined what would be my extended family for at least the next seven years......
